Mating and pinching in holomorphic
dynamics
We consider three types of one (complex) dimensional
conformal dynamical system: rational maps, Kleinian
groups, and holomorphic correspondences. In each case "quasiconformal
surgery" can be used to fit together prescribed behaviours on different
parts of the Riemman sphere to obtain a conformal system, and
"quasiconformal deformation theory" can be used to vary the system. We
discuss principles and examples.
